Tell Me Thursday ...

Looks like there's a wave happening!  Laura of Crooks & Crazies started it, and all the other bloggers are picking it up and making me look like a slacker, so here goes:

(1) How did you get into border collies (or whatever your dogs of choice are)? What started it all?

I was one of those lovely parents who wanted a dog for their kid for Christmas.  I spent quite a bit of time right before the holiday scouring the shelters for "just the right dog."  I wanted one he could play ball with, and people told me to get a Border Collie.  I knew nothing about them.  I went to the Border Collie Rescue in Southern California and met with the woman and she showed me a few dogs that were quite hyper and one that took off and never returned ... while we were standing there.  I was not interested.  I went back to the shelter on my lunch hour, and while looking into some kennels, I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  Someone was staring at me.

I was told he was a Border Collie / Aussie cross.  As you can see ... he was probably closer to a Great Pyr cross of some sort.  But that's Jag.  He was my buddy for 12 years.  I took him for an instinct test at the local herding facility, and he chased a few sheep in a round pen, and I found myself writing a big check for a series of lessons, and the madness ensued.

(2) How many dogs do you have? All dog math variations accepted.

Depends on what day it is.  Today?  4.

(3) What do you do for a day job?

I'll have to get back to you on this one.

(4) What questions would you like to answer (or ask)?

Who is your newest dog, where is he/she from, and why did you choose him/her?

What working traits are you drawn to in these dogs?

Is there a dog that you raised that, if you knew then what you know now, you would have raised them differently?

How important do you find the breeding behind the dog as far as the impact on their temperament, working ability, etc.?

(5) What was for dinner last night?

I've been out of town almost every weekend, so I haven't kept a whole lot in my fridge. I was too lazy to go shopping last night, so I had ... crackers and water!

  1. Crackers and water, eh? Back in another life there were times when the ex-hubs and I couldn't decide what to have for dinner so we had nothing. I think crackers and water might actually trump nothing. lol!

Great questions, Jodi! I'll trot one of them out next week. :)

Thank you for sharing Jag's photo and story today, and thank you for playing.

  2. Jodi, this question: Is there a dog that you raised that, if you knew then what you know now, you would have raised them differently?

I could write a book. On Jane. When you start to think you know what you're doing, then you change horses. . .Poor Jane! Good thing she likes me!
